An additional nitrogen supply can mitigate these effects inducing in the plants a series of physiological and biochemical mechanisms that let it to cope the lack of water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT:<\/strong> The objective of this study was to evaluate foliar applications of <strong>Fitomare<\/strong> as a product for increasing drought tolerance on tomato plants.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>WHAT IS FITOMARE?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticaagricola.com\/en\/products\/fitomare\/\"><strong>Fitomare<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is a product from Atl\u00e1ntica Agr\u00edcola formulated with seaweed extract (<em>Ascophyllum nodosum<\/em>) and enriched with amino acids, macro and microelements, which enhances sprouting, flowering, fruit set and increases tolerance to different abiotic stresses.. <strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2366\" style=\"height: 2245px; width: 2551px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticaagricola.com\/upload\/blog\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FITOMARE.png\" alt=\"Foliar application of Fitomare\u00ae increase drought tolerance in tomato plants\" \/><\/strong><strong>MATERIALS AND METHODS:<\/strong> Tomato plants were grown on inert substrate inside a growth chamber (CEBAS-CSIC, Murcia). Four different treatments were applied: Well-watered plants <strong>(100% Etc, Control)<\/strong>, drought <strong>(DS)<\/strong>, drought +<strong> Fitomare<\/strong> foliar application <strong>(DS+Fito)<\/strong>,\u00a0 and drought + commercial product rich in amino acid (foliar) <strong>(DS+PC)<\/strong>. For each treatment there were 6 plants. DS treatment consisted in watering 40% ETc. Measurements: photosynthesis (rate of net CO2 assimilation ACO2 and stomatal conductance gs), vegetative growth, organic solutes (proline and reducing sugars), and oxidative damage (MDA). <strong>RESULTS:<\/strong> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2401\" style=\"height: 643px; width: 2682px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticaagricola.com\/upload\/blog\/uploads\/2017\/08\/PARAMETERS-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/> Drought caused a reduction in the vegetative\u00a0 growth, however in the plants where <strong>Fitomare<\/strong> was applied in foliar form this reduction was lower, as it can be seen in the figure that indicates the drought tolerance (% vegetative growth of plants drought stress treatment compared to control).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2388\" style=\"height: 359px; width: 1024px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticaagricola.com\/upload\/blog\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FOTOS-1024x359.jpg\" alt=\"Foliar application of Fitomare\u00ae increase drought tolerance in tomato plants\" \/> Pictures show the plants at the end of the experiment. It is appreciated that the plants from <strong>DS+Fito<\/strong> treatment are less damaged by the drought than those from other two treatments in which yellowing, loss of turgor, and leaf rolled were observed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2404\" style=\"height: 643px; width: 2013px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticaagricola.com\/upload\/blog\/uploads\/2017\/08\/PARAMETERS-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/> Drought decreased the rate of net CO2 assimilation and stomatal conductance, but this decrease was lower in plants which <strong>Fitomare<\/strong> was applied. Proline, reducing sugars and MDA concentration increased in plants from <strong>DS<\/strong>, and <strong>DS + PC<\/strong> treatments relative to both control, and <strong>DS+ Fito<\/strong> treatments. <strong>CONCLUSIONS:<\/strong> With this data it can be concluded that foliar application of <strong>Fitomare<\/strong> increases drought tolerance of tomato plants.
